Why we chose this topic:
When we first started our History Day projects, we were struggling to find a topic. Our teacher Mr. Browning suggested we look into one of the older entrepreneurs such as Carnegie or J.P Morgan. We saw the project potential in Andrew Carnegie, and that is how we found our topic.
How we conducted our research:
To begin our research, we wanted to start with the basics. We looked for reliable secondary sources so we could get to know Carnegie better. We wanted to know how he left a legacy and what his impact on society was. Per our teacher's suggestion, we then went and found primary sources. After we gathered sources, we began to read them so we could gather all the knowledge. We compiled our base set into the bibliography. We continued adding to our stockpile as we progressed in making our website. In this productive manner, we conducted our research.
How we created and developed our website:
Before we added our knowledge to the website, we thought we should learn about Weebly's features. To our great dismay, we found it difficult to use. After much frustrating agony, we had most of it's features figured out. Eventually, we became comfortable with the features and were able to productively add to our website. We made specially marked tabs to make navigation through our information easier and in time learned the more advanced in-and-outs and were able to add multi-media into our project effectively. We carefully developed the website and we hope you enjoy learning about Andrew Carnegie as much as we did.
How our project relates to the theme:
Andrew Carnegie relates to the theme "Leadership and Legacy" because of Carnegie's impact on society through his works in the steel industry and in philanthropy. With his leadership in the steel industry, he helped develop steel into one of the world's most important industries. Our modern world could not function without steel. Transportation is made of it, shelter is made of it, important utilities are made of it, and much of modern society is made up of it. Without Andrew Carnegie's leadership in the steel industry and the resulted change that came of it, the world would be much different. He was the key to much of our modern infrastructure. He is also undeniably one of the greatest philanthropists of his time. His philanthropic acts have had much impact too. Carnegie donated over 90% of his wealth. Examples of his donations included the founding and funding of public libraries (which were unheard of at the time), teacher pensions, and the support of colleges and technical schools. After the suggestion of a friend, he started a trust called, “Carnegie Corporation” for the purpose of distributing the money after his death. This trust still gives very valuable donations today. Carnegie’s life still impacts our world and has left a tremendous legacy. Much of the infrastructure you enjoy today is because of him. This is how he impacted society.
