The Homestead Strike of 1892:
This strike was a bitter labor dispute. Workers protested a proposed wage cut. Carnegie's partner Henry Frick was determined to break the union. Carnegie was in Scotland (some think this may have been intentional), and gave the go-ahead. Frick hired 300 to Pinkerton agents to protect strike-breakers. The workers and the Pinkertons fought a battle resulting in three detectives deaths and nine workers were dead. The Pinkertons surrendered and quickly left town. Afterwards, the governor ordered the state militia in and they quickly took back over the plants. After a few months, the strike was broken. Unfortunately, this strike scarred Carnegie's reputation.
